✅ Express summary

  • TCO = depreciation + fuel + maintenance/insurance/plate + financing (interest), less resale value.
  • Cashflow answers the question: “How much do I really take out each month?
  • A small variation in consumption quickly changes the cost: at 60,000 km/year, +1 L/100 km = +1,110 $/year (if diesel at $1.85/L).
  • Compare Hino L6 / L7 / L8 models with the same assumptions to decide quickly.

What's the TCO of a truck?

TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) represents the total real cost: depreciation, fuel, annual costs (maintenance/insurance/plate), financing, etc., over a given period, minus the resale value.

TCO measures total “economic” cost. Cashflow tells you how much you’re actually paying out each month (payments + fuel + annual costs), including the initial outlay and resale at the end.

It depends on your settings. Best practice: offer 2 options in the calculator

  • Taxes paid in cash

  • Taxes financed
(to reflect the reality of each buyer).

Based on your duty cycle (city vs. highway), your load, idle speed, and your history if you already have a fleet. Then test 3 scenarios: optimistic / realistic / conservative.

Ideally, yes, especially in a fleet. You can add them as modules:

  • tires/brakes per km

  • downtime (downtime days × cost/day)

Because it has a direct impact on depreciation. A difference of $10,000 on resale represents approximately $2,000/year over 5 years.

PNBV (GVWR) and PNBC (GCWR ) are used to validate that the truck can do the necessary work , legally and without blowing up your costs.

  • GVWR = maximum weight of truck alone, all-inclusive (truck + box/hatch + fuel + equipment + driver + load).
➜ It’s used to know your real payload and avoid overloading (which can lead to fines, accelerated truck wear, breakdowns and higher TCO).

  • GCWR = maximum weight oftruck + trailer combination (truck + trailer + loads).
➜ Essential if you tow, even occasionally, to avoid exceeding the combined capacity.

Why is this important?
If you are often close to the limits, you will generally :

  • Higher fuel consumption ,
  • Increased tire/brake wear ,
  • No maintenance costs , so no downtime

There is no universal answer:

  • Hino L6: often excellent for distribution/boxing and targeted uses around 26,000 lb GVWR.

  • Hino L7: good compromise between capacity and handling.

  • Hino L8: net advantage in combined capacity (PNBC) with 55,000 lbs.

The right choice depends on the type of load you’re going to have on the truck, the territory and your target cost/km.
