Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about our truck replacement simulator

🚛 About the simulator

What is the "When to change your truck" simulator?

The "When to replace your truck" simulator is a free web-based tool developed by Hino Rive-Sud that helps heavy-duty truck owners and fleet managers determine the economically optimal time to replace their vehicle. In just a few minutes, it calculates your real cost of ownership (TCO) and compares it with a new Hino L6, L7, L8 or XL8 series.

How long does it take to fill in the simulator?

Approximately 5 to 7 minutes. You enter the basic information about your current truck (year, mileage, annual maintenance costs, fuel consumption) and the simulator immediately generates your comparative analysis.

Is the simulator free?

Yes, 100% free and with no obligation. No credit cards, no subscriptions, no hidden fees. You'll receive your complete analysis by e-mail at the end.

Do I need to create an account to use the simulator?

No, no account required. Simply provide your email address at the end to receive your personalized report.

Does the simulator work on cell phones?

Yes. The simulator is fully responsive and works on phone, tablet and computer, on all modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge).

📊 Calculations and methodology

How does the simulator calculate when to change my truck?

The simulator compares two scenarios over several years: (1) keeping your current truck, taking into account depreciation, increasing maintenance costs, fuel and fixed assets; and (2) buying a new Hino, with its acquisition cost, financing, warranty and optimized fuel consumption. The economic tipping point is the year when it becomes more profitable to replace.

What is TCO (total cost of ownership)?

TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is the real cost of a truck over its useful life. It includes: purchase price, depreciation, fuel, preventive maintenance, repairs, tires, insurance, financing and downtime due to breakdowns. It is the most reliable indicator for comparing two trucks, as purchase price alone is misleading.

What data are used to estimate the resale value of my truck?

The estimate is based on Quebec and Canadian used heavy-duty truck market trends, adjusted for year, mileage, class (6, 7 or 8), application type (cube, vocational, wrecker, tractor) and box length. For an accurate final assessment, our team can carry out an on-site inspection.

Are the Hino prices in the simulator up to date?

Yes. Reference prices for the Hino L6, L7, L8 and XL8 are updated regularly by our team and reflect current Canadian MSRPs. Final price may vary according to options, promotions and financing available at time of order.

Does the simulator take inflation and rising maintenance costs into account?

Yes. The simulator applies a maintenance cost progression curve typical of heavy trucks (the older the vehicle, the more expensive breakdowns become), and incorporates inflation in fuel and parts costs.

🇨🇦 Hino models in Canada

Which Hino models are available in Canada?

Hino Canada currently offers four conventional diesel truck models: Hino L6 (Class 6, ideal for urban delivery), Hino L7 (Class 7, versatile medium-duty), Hino L8 (Class 8, vocational and cube applications) and Hino XL8 (Class 8 heavy-duty).

What's the difference between a Hino L8 and a Hino XL8?

The Hino L8 is a conventional Class 8 optimized for vocational applications (cube, tipper, medium wrecker). The Hino XL8 is positioned in the heavy-duty Class 8 segment with a higher PNBC, designed for heavy-duty straight truck, heavy-duty towing and heavy-duty applications. The XL8 cannot, however, be converted to a heavy-duty wrecker/rotator application.

Does Hino offer electric trucks in Canada?

No. Hino Canada currently offers diesel trucks only. All models (L6, L7, L8, XL8) are equipped with Cummins diesel engines that comply with EPA and Environment Canada standards.

Which trucks does the Hino XL8 compare with?

The Hino XL8 compares directly with the following models: Western Star 47X / 49X, Mack Granite, Peterbilt 548 / 567, Kenworth T380 / T480, Freightliner 108SD / 114SD (with or without Plus option), and International HV / HX. Our simulator integrates these comparisons to give you a realistic view of the market.
